The Local History of Kawana Waters
Kawana Waters is a coastal suburb located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. The suburb is part of the Kawana Waters postcode area and is situated 9.3 kilometres south of the Maroochydore city centre. The suburb is named after the body of water that it overlooks, the Kawana Lake.
Early History
The original inhabitants of this area were the Kabi Kabi people who lived in the area for thousands of years prior to European settlement. The Kabi Kabi people made their living by hunting, fishing, and gathering bush tucker. The area was then settled by Europeans in the early 1800s, and the first recorded European settlers in the region were the Archer brothers who established a cattle station in the area.
Development of the Area
Kawana Waters began to develop in the 1960s and 1970s when The Kawana Estates property was subdivided into residential lots. The estate was built on former grazing land, and the developers took advantage of the area's natural beauty and proximity to the coast by creating residential lots around the Kawana Lake. The lake was created by the excavation of sand, and it was designed as a recreational area for residents.
